Caring for 100% Cashmere Sweaters

When you go shopping for a women’s sweater made from Cashmere you will want to make sure that you read the label. A lot of people call any soft wool Cashmere, however, this is not a correct usage of the term Cashmere. Real Cashmere comes from the wool of the Cashmere goat, which is indigenous to the high plateau regions of Asia. To make sure that the sweater that you select is real Cashmere look for sweaters that are labeled as made from 100% pure Cashmere.

When you are selecting a Cashmere sweater you will first want to select a color that is complementary to your coloring and that will also fit into the color palette of your current wardrobe. If you are looking for an un-dyed Cashmere then you should look for Cashmere sweaters that are white, grey or brown, as these are the natural hues of the wool. If you would prefer a designer color you will need to look for dyed Cashmere. After selecting a color you will want to make sure that you select the right size for you. If you are shopping in a store then you should try on the Cashmere sweaters that you are interested in. If you are shopping online you will need to take your measurements and use the online store’s sizing chart to pick the right size for you.

While Cashmere creates beautiful pieces of fabric that are good insulators, this fabric is very delicate. To care for your Cashmere sweater you will want to hand wash it. A lot of labels will tell you to dry clean only, however, you will get better results with the hand wash. You should think about washing your knitted Cashmere like washing your hair. Start by using cool water and a mild detergent or soap like baby shampoo or Woolite. Swish and swirl the sweater in the cool water gently. When you rinse your sweater you may want to add in a little hair conditioner to the rinse water to act as a fabric softener. When you are trying to get the excess water out of the sweater you don’t want to twist or wring out the sweater as this will not only damage the shape of the sweater, but it will also damage the fine fibers. Finally lay the sweater flat on a towel to air dry. To prolong the life of your sweater you will want to clean it after every 6 to 7 wearings and you shouldn’t wear the sweater more than 2 times a week
